Ted Lasso and why women need to embrace self-promotion
I was just watching an old interview with the Ted Lasso cast (Brene Brown might think she’s the president of the Ted Lasso fan club, but I’m not so sure…) in which Juno Temple (Keeley) says she’s bad at self-promotion.
I hope that hearing that even the powerhouse actor behind “boss-ass bitch” Keeley Jones struggles with putting herself out there, makes you feel less alone in your own struggles. And I hope it also galvanizes you, by showing you that no matter what apex you reach, self-advocacy will be hard.
Fortunately, as Glennon Doyle reminds us: We can do hard things.
We live in a culture that conditions women to play small. That means that being big — being confident in our talents and successes, asking for opportunities, refusing to settle — will, for most of us, never be easy. But what it doesn’t mean is that we should give in to the pressure to shrink. We keep fighting — for our own sake, and for the sake of the other women who we inspire when we take up more space.
As Roy Kent would say, “Don’t you dare settle for fine.”
